The Norfolk

Pretty damn excited this place is within walking distance from my work. Although it was hard to get a table in the patio style smoking area at first (and on a school night no less!) this smoking playground was well worth the wait!

The actual smoking area is a covered courtyard at the rear of the venue featuring a big tree draped in colored lights as the centerpiece. It has a backyard patio vibe about it which is accentuated by mismatched op shop chairs and comfy bench seats. What’s unique about the Norfolk experience is that it feels like your outside whilst being relatively inside (yet well ventilated). It’s warm - outdoor heaters, enclosed walls and body heat from all the other patrons helps - and completely sheltered from the rain - its covered by a really high roof made of corrugated plastic so you can still see the sky.

My friends and I gave the Norfolk about a 40% cultural diversity rating - which is pretty high compared to some other places I’ve reviewed. Was good to be in a place that didn’t just consist of a sea of white people. It seemed like the Norfolk was the place to hang with a group of friends as i didn’t see any couples on their own. We did see however, one dog, one Asian man in a suit and some pretty good looking bar staff.

The food was pretty good, American style which is oh so cool right now. Chicken wings, potato skins, soft shell tacos, and $10 steaks on Wednesday’s. To be honest though the place was quite busy and it took way too long for everyone to get their food which was kind of disappointing. This and the fact that it seemed like our table was the only table that had an ashtray were the only things letting me down.

What’s better to wash down a healthy meal of quesadilla’s and potato skins than a $20 jug of Sangria! Probably the most potent Sangria in Sydney but definitely worth a taste. The Norfolk has quite a few special cocktails that go for $30 a jug and I look forward to making my way through the list!

I highly recommend the Norfolk for a good night out smoking with friends, I will definitely be returning in the near future.

The Gazebo

The Gazebo in Kings Cross is pretty much a smokers wet dream. With the smoking area taking up around 80% of the venue and only leaving a few tables indoors (and we all know the action always happens outside).

My first time there it was pretty chilly outside and i went to enjoy some mulled wine with my friends. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the outside area combatted the cold, they had gas heaters in between the tables which gave sweet relief from the harsh winter air.

The tables are covered by striped shade cloths which both give the outside area that cozy feeling as well as provides protection from bad weather. The décor is eclectic and interesting and kind of gives you that antique shop cluttered vibe but manages to make it balance out in the open space.

The drinks and food are both reasonably priced and of a consistent high quality, whether you are there for dinner or just drinks and nibbles with friends you are well catered to. The staff is generally of good quality and eager to top up your wine glass if its threatening to empty.

It’s a little hard to find parking nearby so be prepared to trek back to your car after a long night - heels are not recommended.

Overall I have to say the Gazebo provides a smoker friendly haven in a city where anti smoking attitudes rule supreme.

The Man Who Sang and the Woman Who Kept Silent

When Albie Sachs visited our law school he was in the process of launching a book. The Strange Alchemy of Life and Law is a deeply engaging account of the early life of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, refreshingly free of legal jargon. I bought a signed copy that night and it has never been far from my bedside table since. Yesterday I also noticed a well-thumbed copy in UCT’s Brand Van Zyl Law Library, which made me smile.

Anyway, on the book’s front cover there is an image from an artwork by Judith Mason which now hangs in the building of South Africa’s Constitutional Court in Johannesburg. The piece – a dress made from blue plastic bags with white writing on its skirt – is entitled The Man Who Sang and the Woman Who Kept Silent. There is a note in the book in which the artist explains her work. I remember first opening the book and beginning to read the note…

“The work on the cover of this book commemorates the courage of Phila Ndwandwe and Harald Sefola whose deaths during the Struggle were described to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission by their killers.

Phila Ndwandwe was shot by the security police after being kept naked for weeks in an attempt to make her inform on her comrades. She preserved her dignity by making panties out of a blue plastic bag. This garment was found wrapped around her pelvis when she was exhumed. ‘She simply would not talk’, one of the policeman involved in her death testified. ‘God…she was brave.’

Harald Sefola was electrocuted with two comrades outside Witbank. While waiting to die he requested to sing Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika. His killer recalled, ‘he was a very brave man who believed strongly in what he was doing.’

I wept when I heard Phila’s story, saying to myself, ‘I wish I could make you a dress.’ Acting on this childlike response, I collected discarded blue plastic bags that I sewed into a dress. On its skirt I painted this letter:

Sister, a plastic bag may not be the whole armour of God, but you were wrestling with flesh and blood, and against powers, against the rulers of darkness, against spiritual wickedness in sordid places. Your weapons were your silence and a piece of rubbish. Finding that bag and wearing it until you were disinterred is such a frugal, commonsensical, house-wifely thing to do, an ordinary act…At some level you shamed your captors, and they did not compound their abuse of you by stripping you a second time. Yet they killed you. We only know your story because a sniggering man remembered how brave you were. Memorials to your courage are everywhere; they blow about in the streets and drift on the tide and cling to thorn-bushes. This dress is made from some of them. Hamba kahle. Umkhonto.

The dress, swinging on its hanger in the breeze, reminded me of the drapery on the Victory of Samothrace in the Louvre. So I painted a local Victory figure moving through imprisoning grids of wire accompanied by a hyena – at once a predator and a scavenger.

Justice Albie Sachs saw these pieces and a painting of three braziers I had made in memory of Sefola and his friends. He suggested I combine Phila’s dress and the braziers into a commemorative work. Eventually the dress, the dress painting, and the second larger canvas were all placed together in the South African Constitutional Court.

Having the opportunity to honour the man who sang and the woman who kept silent has been a privilege, but it leaves me with an abiding sense of shame.”

Rooftop @ Sweeny’s

In the heart of the city, hidden up countless flights of stairs (well probably only 3 or 4) lies a smokers dream. The rooftop at Sweeny’s, located on the corner of Druitt and Clarence Street is an open air watering hole surrounded by skyscrapers that still somehow manages to retain a relaxed vibe.

Sweeny’s is perfect for sunny afternoons and hot summer nights socializing with friends or colleagues - just don’t leave your sunnies at home! However there are shade cloths and umbrellas to shield you from the suns harsh rays and melodic pop music to keep up the vibe.

There’s a little bar up top with less varieties than it’s downstairs counterparts but definitely beats having to go up and down the stairs everytime you want a drink!

One downfall is the distinct lack of ashtrays which leaves you in that awkward situation when you’re finished your cigarette - do I butt it out on my chair leg and then place it on the table or do I just toss it on the floor - neither of these options is ideal!

Sweeny’s doesnt seem to get packed to full capacity during the weekdays but if you dare to venture there on a Friday or Saturday night expect something completely different. The sun goes down and the music turns up and the crowd get a little out of control so don’t expect to get a seat. The open air component makes it unique and enjoyable even if loud music and crowds aren’t particularly your thing.

Overall Sweeny’s got something to offer for everyone

Strawberry Hills Hotel

Located on the corner of Devonshire and Elizabeth st Surry Hills, the Strawberry Hills Hotel is just down the road from Central and in the heart of one of Sydney’s hipster capitals. It’s not the trendiest place in Sydney but the upstairs open air beer garden is the perfect place for after work drinks, or a relaxed catch up with friends.

The greenery and suspended mood lighting mixed with exposed brick and timber decking create a relaxed vibe that’s without pretentiousness.

The music is a strange eclectic mix of 90s pop and indie classics with a peppering of disco hits- just to keep you guessing. Definite pluses are the cheap drinks, ashtrays on every table, attractive bar staff (both guys n girls) and surprisingly good food for only $15 for a main.

Con: don’t go here if it’s raining, you’ll be standing in the doorway or squished up against the wall all night as it’s not weather proof!

But overall the Strawberry Hills Hotel can host a good night out for both smokers and non.
